Elizabeth is top-down, triangular lace shawl with charming traditional Shetland stitch patterns and motifs, designed with a modern sensibility. It looks a lot more complex than it is to knit, but don’t tell any non-knitters that, of course!

Elizabeth is offered as a chart-only pattern with large, easy-to-read charts and very detailed instructions on how to use them. Even knitters who have not previously used charts should find these user-friendly and simple to comprehend.

My charts have made believers out of many knitters who were vehemently anti-chart before using mine. But if you have any questions or comments, pattern support is my pleasure and is always available.

A great shawl to showcase your favorite subtly-variegated hand-dyed or tonal yarns, Elizabeth will also look stunning knitted in solid colors. Lace or fingering weight yarn is suggested for this pattern. But please note: Both of the shawls pictured were knitted with lace weight yarn. Estimated yardage is the amount of yarn I personally used, which is in line with the yardage used by test knitters. Substituting fingering weight will increase the size of the finished shawl and could require considerably more yarn depending on needle size, so please make sure to have extra. If you knit with a looser tension, you will also require more yarn. Natural fibers are recommended for the best blocked results.

Also included are two additional instruction sheets “How to Block a Lace Shawl” and “Lace Shawl Knitting Tips” for knitters new to the joys and tribulations of creating lace shawls.

Construction Notes: Elizabeth starts at the center back of the neck and is knit down to the bottom edge. There is a two-stitch garter border on each side, four yarn-over increases on each right-side row and a center stitch separating each half. Patterning is done on the right side rows only, with all wrong side rows being purled between the garter borders.

Blocked Size: 72” x 36”

Yardage: The maroon shawl pictured used 850 yards of heavy lace weight yarn (Dragonfly Fibers Squishy Lace, 100% Merino) on US #4 (3.5mm) needles.

The green shawl pictured used 785 yards of regular lace weight yarn (Black Sheep Dyeworks Silk/Merino Lace) on US #3 (3.25mm) needles. The weight of this lovely yarn is very similar to Jaggerspun Zephyr Lace 2/18, which would also be a good choice for this pattern.

I highly recommend that you set the “Page Scaling” on your Adobe Acrobat printing window (left side) to NONE in order for the charts to print as large as possible.
