The cushion in the photos shows two different emojis. It has a winking face on one side and a sleeping face on the other.

The pattern includes charts for five other emojis. You also get

  • Smiling
  • Sad
  • Eyes Right
  • Eyes Left
  • Wry Smile

Using Stylecraft Special DK, in Lobelia and Sunshine, the finished cushion is approximately 30 cm (12”) square. One side of the cushion takes about 80 metres (85 yards) of each colour. You can use any yarn but this might change the overall size of the cushion.

It is very difficult to photograph illusions. When you look from directly in front you only see narrow stripes. The emoji appears when you look from the side. The cushion should be as flat as possible to avoid distorting the image.

Several squares could also be joined together to make a blanket. See our Emoji Blanket pattern for similar images constructed in a different way to give an alternative result.

It would be particular fun to use the happy and sad emojis on the back and front of a child’s reversible sweater.
