This hat is perfect for one skein of super bulky, but you can also make it with 5 to 6 strands of fingering weight yarn held together as in the wheat colored version! Expect the hat to take about 150 grams of wool. The smaller size is shown in green variegated bulky and in wheat; the larger size is shown in blue variegated bulky. Note: the male model has TONS of hair in that hat; the female model has much much less hair. This hat is super forgiving fit-wise. The last two pics show the hat blocking!

My very favorite hat is a fuzzy black bucket hat, and I’ve wanted it in lots of different colors for the absolute longest time ever. And when my kiddo tried to steal it from me, I realized I’m not the only one who absolutely loves it. So I designed a knitted one!

The Essential Bucket Hat is a quick knit and fits a wide range of heads. After my kiddo tried the green one on, I realized there needed to be a slightly bigger and longer one because he’s not the only one in the world with tons of gorgeous hair. The larger size still only takes one skein of super bulky yarn! And bonus! The wheat-colored hat is made with six strands of fingering weight yarn, so you can make your own tweedy colorway from stash!

Note: the red and taupe hat is made with Verb Horizon held together with mohair/silk, and the others are mystery yarns from stash.

About my project

This has been a tough few years for many. Me too. And one thing that’s gotten me through is giving people I care about small gifts. Let’s face it: big projects are beyond what many of us want to do right now. But small bits of knitted love are so manageable, and they’re so satisfying when finished and gifted. And even moreso when they’re made from oddments.

And I wanted to share that lovely feeling with you, because we all have those stray bits and pieces of yarn here and there. They’re different weights and different colors. Some are a full skein. Some are just leftover tidbits, but you can’t throw them away! Definitely not a sweater’s worth of any one color or yarn, let alone a shawl’s worth or even a full pair of socks or mitts. You can’t imagine what to do with them, but you don’t want to part with them. Well. This is the book for you! 15 patterns to turn your scraps into loving bits of kindness that will brighten your friends’ and loved ones’ day.

All patterns have charts (if needed) and written instructions, and you can make them out of oddments. These are small projects, not big ones: the perfect size for a cozy evening or two of stitching.
