For some time now I’ve been playing with the idea of modifying my “deer with little antlers” hat to make a baby fawn version. Now that I have my own little munchkin, it seemed the perfect time to knit a fawnchkin! Not sure he will enjoy wearing matching hats with his mama in the future, so I had to take advantage of the moment. ☺

Sizes:
Child - head circumference approx. 19”
Adult - head circumference approx. 22”
Larger size directions are in parenthesis.

Finished measurements:
Child - 8.5 inches wide x 7 inches high measured flat.
Adult - 10 inches wide x 8 inches high measured flat.

Yarns used: worsted weight yarn such as:
MC: Cascade yarns, Alpaca Lana D’oro, 100 g - 219 yds - 200 m, 50% Superfine Alpaca, 50% Peruvian Highland Wool, Color # 1154 -Glazed Ginger. One skein per hat.

CC1: About 8 yards of any worsted weight yarn in cream. (I used the same yarn in color # 1030 Ecru.)

Tension/gauge:
Work 20 sts and 36 rounds to measure 4x4” in pattern stitch (rounds 1 - 3 repeated) using US 7 or 4.5 mm needles with MC. Use needles necessary to get gauge.

Notions:
A pair of US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles 16” long
A set of US 7 (4.5 mm) dpns, stitch markers, tapestry needle, sewing needle, cream/white or clear thread.

Tiny owl stitch dictionary:
CC1: contrasting color 1
dpns: double pointed needles
i-cord: knit sts. Don’t turn work. Slide work down to other end of dpn. Bring yarn around back and knit sts again.
kfb: knit into front and back of the next stitch.
k: knit
k2tog: knit the next two stitches together.
MC: main color
p: purl
pm: place marker
sm: slip marker
ssk: slip next 2 stitches knitwise onto your right needle, insert left needle purlwise into the front of the stitches and knit them together.
St st: stockinette/stocking stitch. knit a row, purl a row.
st(s): stitch(es)
(WS): wrong side.

pattern notes:
First, the ribbed hat is knitted in the round. Then the ears and the lil antler nubs are knitted separately in the round and sewn onto the hat. Finally, the little spots are embroidered over downward facing purl bumps
