This French-style Toque is a perfect pattern for the beginning felter and includes more than just the knitting instructions. This pattern includes easy to understand knitting instructions, recommendations for yarn, information on how to felt a hat, and details for shaping and applying professional touches to the felted hat. You can knit the brim with or without a coordinating color. Two brim width sizes are included and a technique which creates a smooth turn-up for the brim.

The toque is a versatile hat and can be worn with both dressy and casual attire. You can adorn the hat with a button, flower or ribbons. And best of all, it keeps you extra warm. Felted hats are rain and water repellent. A felted hat is great for traveling because it’s pack-able and springs back into shape when you put it on.

Materials:
U. S. Size 11 24-inch circular needles and dpns
1 stitch marker
Approximately 440 yards #4 worsted weight 100% wool
If you want a contrast color as shown in the brim, you will need 60 yards of that color
Purchase yarn that is felt-able. Do not use super wash or washable wool.
Optional – Hat Shaper from Hatshapers.com or other form to shape your hat. I like the Medium Plus Plus and the Large Classic Dome for most of my hats.

Measurements: The hat is knitted in one size fits many teens/adults. The drying form that you use will determine the finished size of your hat.

Gauge: Purchase a yarn that shows on the wrapper a gauge of approximately 20 stitches and 26 rows to 4 inch by 4 inch when knitted with U.S. Size 7 needles
