Birds of a feather knit together, so join the flock and Let’s Flamingle!!!

This flamazing shawl takes its cue from those pink-feathered, stilt-legged quirky friends of ours that are born to stand tall, stand out, and be flocking fabulous!

Knit in beautiful mohair and fingering weight yarn the Flamingle Shawl takes the plain, modern rectangular wrap/poncho and elevates it into a timeless piece that is both soft and airy just begging to be wrapped up in.

A simple and elegant design that comes from the concept of negative spaces created by the use of mohair and short row sections. This element captures the air and light between texture and produces a soft flowing design that lets light through. Relaxing garter sections between help provide a simple backdrop for highlighting and creating drama.

One pattern … two versions …. infinite possibilities …

Flamingle can be worn as a luxurious and sophisticated rectangle shawl, or seamed together to sit gracefully on the shoulders becoming a delicate and striking poncho.

Yarn: Main Color (MC): Emma’s Yarn Hella Hank (80% Superwash Merino/10% cashmere/10% nylon, 600yards/150grams)
Shawl- Cally Girl -600 yards Poncho- Whisper -600 yards

Coordinating Color (CC): Emma’s Yarn Marvelous Mohair (72% Kid mohair/ 28% Silk, 459yards/50grams) Shawl- Briar Rose -450 yards Poncho- Barbie Girl -450 yards

Yarn notes:

  • Shawl uses all 450 yards of Mohair yarn- so please buy extra if you are concerned about gauge.

  • I suggest switching Main Color yarn to Emma’s Yarn Super Silky if deciding to enlarge the shawl

Yarn Substitution Notes:
This pattern was written with a mohair laceweight yarn as CC. If you have a mohair sensitivity you can use a wool or alpaca lace weight yarn, this will give you a similar lightweight drape to the sample shawl shown. You could also knit it using 2 colors in fingering weight yarns. Keep in mind this will produce a shawl that is still beautiful but less lightweight and flowy than the shawl shown in the photos.

Needles: US 4/3.5mm 24” circular needles

Notions: T-pins and blocking wires for blocking, darning needle if making poncho, crochet hook if you want to try my preferred cast on

Gauge: 20 stitches = 4 inches in Garter Stitch after blocking. Although gauge is not crucial for this project, it will affect the finished size and yarn requirements. A looser gauge will result in the use of more yarn.

Finished Size: 66” x 22”
