Inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s original cover designs for his Lord of the Rings trilogy, this hat features a surprise: an open top to let out your hair or just provide a bit of ventilation for those who run warm.

Instructions are also included for a closed-top slouchy hat, and a cowl too!

The hat uses eight (8) 1-oz skeins (1 each of 8 colors); the sample is shown in Blackberry Ridge Fingering. The pattern is written for two sizes: Child/Adult XS and Adult M/L.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Tuque: 20 (24)“ circumference and 11.75” tall
Slouchy Hat: 20 (24)” circumference and 12.5” tall
Cowl: 32” circumference and 11.75” tall

MATERIALS:
US 4 (3.50mm) 16” circulars, and one set of 16” circulars in 2 sizes smaller than size used to obtain gauge
For slouchy hat: Needles as above, plus DPNs in size used to obtain gauge
For Cowl: US 4 (3.50mm) 20-24” circulars
