Fremont is a top-down crescent shawl with a knitted-on lace borders. The shawl starts at the top with a garter-tab cast on and is worked outward, with one lace stitch pattern flowing into the next. It’s finished off with my new favorite thing – a knitted-on lace border.

Small-sized shawl is shown in photos. Large size has more repeats of lace in the body of the shawl and a wider border edge (an extra row of eyelets is added).

pattern notes
Gauge is not critical in this pattern, but a different gauge will affect yardage and size of shawl.

The shawl can be worked in two sizes. The pattern is written for the 400 yard shawl with the instructions for the 800 yard shawl written in parentheses ( ), where necessary. If no parentheses are used, the instructions are the same for both the small and large version.

On Row 11 of the lace border, after binding off 5 sts, there is 1 st on right-hand needle, this counts as the first st worked after the stitches are bound off (i.e. it’s the first st of the k4 that follows the binding off).
