This design is part of a three-pattern booklet. Pictures of the other two designs shown at bootom.

The Great Zimbabwe Vest is in tribute to the beautiful artistry of the Shona people. Knit side-to-side with an asymmetrical front which crosses to close on one side, it features a back central intarsia triangular motif but lends itself to many African interpretations.

Knit in a mix of yarns -- nearly any weight, any fiber. I used Mango Moon’s Chakra and Dharma, HandMaiden’s Mulberry Silk Tussah, linen, cotton and handspuns -- about 500 yards all together. The needle sizes shown above are provided as a guide for yarn selection, only. The vest is knit on 5.5 needles. The vest is sized to fit small, medium and large and is designed for more size-tailoring through the side gussets.

Not into earthy tones? The African people celebrate color. Batiks, brightly-painted surfaces –everything dances with hue. If the earthy tones are not your thing, embrace the people’s passion for bright, lively color and work your vest in any shade desired. The Zulus work exquisite beadwork in black, red, white and yellow, for instance. This is your adventure!
