The Tale: The melting, slushy snow was unable to hinder Faerven’s progress, because even half-elves are remarkably sure-footed. Although the days were noticeably growing longer and the air had that fresh baby-leaves, damp-earth smell that signaled spring’s approach, he was still grateful for the headband that kept his ears warm.

His younger sister Mala had been so proud when she’d presented it to him; it had been her first full knitting project. Their mother had carefully tutored her, helping her knit a headband that matched the scarf mother had given him last fall. The chevrons on his headband reminded him of the fletching of the arrows that were ever present in the quiver on his back.

He was delivering a bow and arrows he and his father had crafted for a young friend of the family. She was just learning archery, and her skill had improved to the point that they felt she was ready for a bow custom made for her. Faerven was still in training himself, having shown a particular aptitude for carving. He enjoyed the feel of the wood and the tools as he carved intricate vines and leaves; they almost seemed alive, as if growing on the surface of the wood.

He had not been on this path since the previous summer, and as he rounded a bend, he discovered that the weight of winter’s snow and ice had brought down a rather large limb, fully blocking the trail…

The Half-Elf Ranger Scarf was published on Ravelry in 2017. Welcome to the second in the series, the Headband!

This simple but fun earwarmer is worked sideways (flat) and seamed with either Kitchener stitch or three-needle bind-off. The reversible cable, eyelet edging, and optional colorwork stripes add interest, while the garter stitch makes it an ideal travel or TV watching project. Because of the cable, the Craft Yarn Counsel labels this pattern Intermediate; however, this is one of the simplest cable projects you’ll find, so don’t be afraid to attempt it if you’re a brave beginner!

Skill Level: Intermediate

Stitches Used: slip, k, k2tog, p, yo; 8 stitch reversible cable

Notions: crochet hook for provisional cast on, two stitch markers (optional), cable needle, yarn needle

Recommended yarn weights: Sport, dk, worsted, aran

Final Measurements: 20” circumference x 5” wide (50 cm x 12.5 cm)
