This pattern features the German Herringbone Rib stitch, which was contributed to Barbara Walker’s Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns by Hildegard M. Elsner of Alden, Pennsylvania. This sock pattern is named in her honor.

Special features of the pattern are:
• There are three sizes included in the pattern, designed for legs approximately 8, 9 or 10 inches in diameter. The sizes are created by using a slight variant of the pattern stitch in each size.
• The gussets on this pattern are twisted rib triangles integrated into the leg of the sock and therefore do not require picking up any stitches.
• There are two variants of the gusset. One is taller and fits a high arch well; the other fits a medium to low arch. Either variant of the gusset can be used with any size of the sock.
• The pattern produces a fabric that “waves” somewhat, making it very suitable for self-striping yarn. It also works very nicely in a solid color.
