Reflecting the stars and shimmering of the moon, this delicate yet robust shawl will provide warmth and protection. Though the evening may be brisk, the double-layered herringbone stitch, coupled with a beautiful yarn from Gingers Hand Dyed, will keep the cold at bay.

Throughout my short travels, I am always challenged by perception of scale. Though this could undoubtably be expressed more eloquently, I shall make a small attempt.

Only through reaching out to new experiences, such as travelling, reading and meeting new people can our world grow larger. We perceive only a very small part of this world - even then, it is through our own lens.

There is a wonderful exhibition (the Owner’s Manual) in New Zealand. Beautiful jewellery created by Warwick Freeman, with text from Julie Ewington; exploring ownership, possession and our perception of our place in the world. My favourite piece is Freemans star, which represents the very tiny star-shaped part of our world we view when we press the tips of our index fingers and thumbs together.

Construction
Ineffable is knit from right to left, working through wonderfully textured herringbone stitch, which is gradually replaced by a subtle lace. The finished shawl is rhomboid in shape.

Designed to be worn gathered with a pin to show off stitchwork, wrapped around the shoulders, or folded lengthways as a very warm and lovely scarf.

Yarn: Ginger’s Hand Dyed Splendor 4 ply (fingering; 50% Merino, 50% silk; 400m per 100g skein)
Shade: Hocus Pocus x 2 skeins
- when substituting yarn, any 4 ply with good drape and enough definition to see the herringbone will work well.

Needle: 5mm / US 8 circular needle
80cm / 32in length

Beads: (optional) (size 5 or 6)
Crochet hook: (if adding optional beads) (approx. 0.6mm)

Always use the needle size that enables you to match the specified gauge.

• 24 stitches and 32 rows over 10cm / 4in of stocking stitch worked flat and blocked, using 5mm/ US 8 needles
• 32 stitches and 25 rows over 10cm / 4in of herringbone stitch worked flat and blocked, using 5mm/ US 8 needles
