A simple to knit asymetrical shawl inspired by Waterton-Glacier National Parks in Alberta, Canada and Montana, United States. This shawl was created to be accesible to all levels of knitters and inspired by the “International Peace Park,” a union of both National Parks that occurred in 1932 as a symbol of peace. The United Nations recognizes the International Peace Park as a World Heritage Site.

Each section of the shawl represents an aspect of the International Peace Park beginning and ending with solid colors for the United States and Canada, the stripes capture the mountain ridges of both Glacier National Park and Waterton National Park, and the simple lace section symbolizes the peace park, specifically Waterton Lake that spans the border of both countries.

The shawl begins with a point and slowly expands to the final width of the shawl. Except for the lace section, stockinette stitch is used with intermittent rows of garter stitch.

This pattern was released on September 21, 2017 in honor of the International Day of Peace as recognized by the United Nations. May you find peace and comfort as you knit and wear this shawl.

Yarn requirements: Two 100 g skeins (one of each color) of fingering weight yarn (~435 yds/100 g) are needed. One skein for color A; one skein for color B. I used Tinderbox Alpine Lakes (color A) and Lichen (color).

A note on the needles: Due to the large number of stitches at the end, you’ll want a circular needle approximately 32 inches long.
