Gauge and yarn is your personal preference at the end. Finer yarn – tighter gauge is a general rule. The shawl blocked will be shorter in the case of finer yarn and larger if the thicker yarn is used.
Making a modern scarf many knitter prefer to work with fingering or sock yarns versus lace yarns.

For sports and DK weight yarn the gauge is 10st x 14 rows in 2’’x2’’ or 2x5cm.

For fingering and sock yarn the gauge is 11st Х 15rows in 2’’x2’’or 5Х5cm

For lace weight yarn the gauge is 12st Х 16rows in 2’’x2’’or 5Х5cm

Needles:
2mm-2.75mm for lace weight yarn
3mm-3.5mm for fingering weight yarn
4mm for sports and DK weight yarn

The base medium shawl (like navy blue on blue sweater) needs 368 yards or 2 skeins of nature spun sports yarn. Extra large shawl can be knit till the yarn ends as long as one likes. I ‘capped’ it as 700yards and about 2.4 m long wrap.
