I had an idea for a hat design that featured a ribbed band that was knitted flat and seamed closed. I was worried about the half-stitch jog that occurs when you seam two pieces of knitting that grow in opposite directions.

Then it occurred to me – 1x1 rib looks just like a thick stockinette, so why not separate the knit and purl stitches, then use the kitchener method to seam them together in the round?

To try out my idea I made a simple ribbed headband that measured 1” wide by 21” circumference. To make a headband you will need:
• About 40 yards of sport weight yarn.
• Set of 5 double pointed needles US 7/4.5 mm

For my grafting method you will need:
• Scrap yarn for a provisional cast-on
• Darning needle
