A chance conversation about a random topic led to a collaboration between Kino Knits and the Yarnover Truck. It’s one of the things I love about knitting – that spontaneous interactions can lead to real community.

Designed for the Yarnover Truck Happiness Gradient Club yarn inspired by George Seurat’s, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,” this pattern features parasols and increasingly frequent yarn overs (get it?) in honor of the painting’s status as one of the most famous examples of pointillism. This is also a great shawl for someone who loves thunderstorms!

Skills: increases (M1L, M1P, YO), decreases (K2tog, K3tog, P2tog, SSK, SSP), knitting through the back loop.

Yarn:
100 g fingering weight yarn
Sample shown in Apple Tree Knits Luxe Fingering Gradient (51% silk, 49% merino), 500 yds/457 m per 4 oz/113 g), colorway La Grand Jatte Gradient

Dimensions:
As this shawl is highly adaptable, the finished dimensions will vary with yardage. Sample used 500 yards had a 58” /147 cm wingspan and was 25”/63.5 cm deep.

Needles:
US 6 (4.0-mm) needles to knit flat, or size needed to obtain gauge.

Tools:

  • 2 stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle
  • Gram scale
  • Blocking wires and pins

Blocked Gauge:
22 sts and 31 rows = 4”/10 cm, stockinette
