“ I feel that a lace shawl is one of those pieces that every knitter should try at least once. There are many exquisite patterns out there, but they can seem daunting for beginners, or those that have not done a lot of lace. This shawl is designed to be a learning experience. The shape is a classic triangle, with increases at each side and in the center. The lace patterns are knit one at a time in sections, starting with an easy eyelet pattern and progressing to lace knit from both right and wrong sides. Every chapter consists of two sections; one lace section, and one border section. “

The finished shawl is 78” wide (2 meters) and 39” deep ( 1 meter) after blocking. The edging can be made wider if desired.

Materials Needed:
I have used sport weight pure alpaca wool from Garnstudio, Drops Alpaca, 4 skeins of each of two colors. I recommend buying an extra skein for making swatches to learn the different lace patterns.
A long circular needle, at least 32” (80 cm), but I recommend longer. Size US#4, 3,5mm or size needed to achieve gauge.
You will also need a blunt tapestry needle, stitch markers, and blocking wires and/or pins.

The tension is relatively loose for this yarn to showcase the lace. The gauge is 21 st and 26 rows in stockinette after blocking. If substituting the yarn, make sure to block your gauge swatch! A small difference in gauge can make a big difference in the final size!
