The Bingham (now Kennecott) Copper Mine in Salt Lake County, Utah is one of the largest open pit copper mines in the world. In the 1800s the small mine was worked by many residents of Lark, Utah, a small mining town in the Oquirrh Mountains. As the mine grew, it displaced both mountain and town. Since 1978 the town of Lark no longer exists having been sacrificed for our need of copper. The face centered cubic structure of copper gives it good thermal and electrical conductivity, making it one of the most necessary metals in our technological society.
