The Late Bloomer Mittens first appeared in Making Magazine No .10 Intricate. The pattern was conceived on a sunny autumn day in Toronto. It was during a bike ride past lawns and gardens decorated with fall foliage that the idea took hold. Dinner plate–sized dahlias in burnt orange, yellow, and red bumped heads with towering sunflowers reaching toward a blue sky. These mittens were designed to imitate this jubilant mishmash of blooms.

NOTES

  • A strand of Yarn A and a strand of Yarn B are held together as you knit and embroider the Mittens.
  • Mittens are knit in Stocking stitch in the rnd from the cuff up. An inner cuff that will fold into the inside of the Mitten is knit first. The Mittens are shaped with increases for the thumb gusset. Decreases shape the top of the Mittens. Thumb stitches are then picked up and the thumb is knit in the rnd. Follow the charts to add knot stitches throughout. After blocking, the Mittens are embellished with embroidery that surrounds each knot stitch to resemble flowers. Optional sewn liners are constructed and hand stitched into place.
