The pattern was born thanks to the Indie Design Gift-A-Long. Have you heard of the Indie Design Gift-A-Long GAL held in Ravelry at the end of the year? It’s a multi-designer promotion to help you kick your holiday gift-making into high gear. The Indie Design GAL is a 6-week long KAL/CAL of holiday gifts made from patterns designed by a rather extensive list of independent designers.

I have been a participating designer and knitter for years and it’s such a great way to discover new-to-me indie designers and knit their patterns. These mitts are inspired by the Twisted Fall hat pattern by Aet Terasmaa. I have made the hat several times and loved these tiny cables creating motifs. This is a traditional Estonian technique called vikeldamine, an item worked in the technique is called vikeldatud.

A natural fiber (merino, alpaca, lambswool, etc.) yarn should be used to knit up the mitts, which will keep its shape without stretching out. Choose light, bouncy, woolen spun yarn for the best cables.
