This is a traditional, authentic Haapsalu Shawl from Estonia. It wasn’t knitted in Estonia, but was designed and knitted to their standards, based on the Ravelry group called Haapsalu Sall. There is a center, which is framed in garter stitch and then there is a border which is also framed in garter stitch. The edging is worked in garter stitch on larger needles in two separate, but identical pieces and sewn on to the shawl. The center is the Lepatrinukiri or ladybug stitch pattern. I then made the border using a basic diamond with nupps and yarn overs. The edging has a zigzag of nupps in it, along with a small diamond of nupps and yarn overs. Traditionally, Haapsalu Shawls are worked in white. Other colors are now acceptable. Not white, white like we have here in the states and not the screaming colors either. Lighter colors will help the nupps pop, whereas the darker colors will eat the nupps. Please read all directions before starting. This shawl was so much fun to design and work. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did. Keep knitting!
