Mackinac (pronounced “Mackinaw”) Island, one of the many treasures of Michigan, is a National Historic Landmark, and a beautiful and popular destination for summer travel. Known for its history, its fudge, its architecture, and its ban on almost all motor vehicles, the vast majority of the island is a natural preserve. One of the many attractions on the island is the Original Mackinac Island Butterfly House.

This pattern was inspired by my visit to the butterfly house this summer, and was originally created with one of my favorite Michigan yarns, purchased from Alford’s, on the Island. Stonehedge Fiber Mills Shepherd’s Wool comes in skeins of 250 yards – one skein is enough to make a pair of mitts and a coordinating hat (I made the sample mitts to pair with the free Butterfly Hat pattern, designed by Sofiya Cremin).

These mitts knit up quickly - knock a pair out in a night or two for a great holiday gift.
