After knitting countless sweaters for myself, my partner was getting…let’s just say…a little envious…of the ever-growing stash of cozy woolen goodness in my closet. So, I finally created a garment with him in mind. Manitou is a classic, easy-to-wear sweater that is equally suited to casual gatherings with friends and chilly autumn hikes in the mountains. The close-fitting neckline ensures that undershirts don’t peek out, and the allover texture keeps the knitting interesting. This sweater is named for my partner’s hometown of Manitou Springs, Colorado, which lies on the traditional territories of the Cheyenne and Ute peoples.

NOTES
Design: Manitou is a classic-fitting raglan pullover. The neckband, hem, and cuffs are worked in 2x2 ribbing and the body features an allover textured stitch.

Construction: This sweater is knit from the top down in the round. Stitches are cast on at the top of the neckband, which is worked first. Short rows create back neck shaping, and raglan increases shape the yoke. Once the yoke is complete, sleeve stitches are put on hold, and the lower body is worked. Stitches are then returned to the needles to complete the sleeves.

Fit: This garment is designed to fit with 2 to 6 in. (5 to 15 cm) of positive ease at the chest. To pick the best size for you, measure your full chest circumference and add your preferred ease of between 2 to 6 in. (5 to 15 cm). Make the size with a finished chest circumference closest to that number.
