The silvery sheen of the Leicester Longwool said “shawl” to me from the moment I saw it. The spin on the yarn doesn’t look like it would work well for cables, but a good wet blocking is all it takes to pop the cable panel and open up the columns of eyelets.

The shawl, named for one of the Leicester Longwool sheep at Ross Farm, is worked from side to side, gradually increasing for the first half and decreasing for the second half. The pattern recommends gauge and gives the yardage for the sample shown, but with a little weighing of the work as you knit, the shawl can be made with any amount of yarn, at any weight, in the gauge the knitter likes.

Required Skills:
The pattern includes common lace and cable stitches, with
patterning on both side of the work. The pattern is written in words and represented in charts. The shawl is worked end to end, including increases for the first half and decreases for the remainder. It can be made larger or smaller by weighing the yarn that you have as you go, and switching from increasing to decreasing when approximately half of your yarn (or less) is used.

Gauge:
16 sts and 24 rows = 4” (10 cm) in stockinette stitch, after blocking.
Cable Edging Repeat is approximately 4” (10 cm) wide and 4 1/2” (11.5 cm) long

Finished measurements:
Length: 62” (157.5 cm)
Depth at Center: 19” (48.25 cm)

Needles/Hooks:
U.S. Size 4 (3.5 mm) or size needed to produce noted gauge

Yarn:
Ross Farm Heritage and Rare Breed Fibers 100% Leicester Longwool, Sport 2 ply“
120g/250 yds, 2 skeins
Sample worked in “Sporty Little Number” and used approximately 495 yds

Additional Supplies:
3 Stitch Markers, Tapestry Needle, Scissors, Blocking wires, Blocking pins, Blocking board

Good Yarn Substitutions:
Any round yarn that shows off cables should work well, especially Cascade 220 Sport, Blue Moon Fiber Arts Woobu, or Imperial Yarn Tracie Too.
