From the pattern description:

Midwinter Leaves peek out from under the sleeves of a heavy sweater or a winter coat. The thick cuffs warm your wrists, while the flaring leaf lace hides a small surprise: little fingerless mitts in considerably finer yarn shield the hands and keep the cuffs in place. The stitches for the mitts are picked up and knit from the wrong side of the cuffs.
