The “Mixology” shawl is a bit of magic. Like the alchemy of mixing drinks, foods, weaving etc. into an entirely new entity, so is knitting this shawl. You simply pick five colors that you like. Do not overthink it! You won’t be entirely sure what the new fabric will look like (see the hot pink and blue in the top photo? The purple between them is a mixture of the two - definitely not planned but what a showstopper!)

The surprise is part of the magic. Speckles, variegated, tonals and solids all mix wonderfully in this pattern, and the order isn’t really that important since the colors will all be combined with each other during the knitting of this shawl. If the colors are similar, it’s also fine: when you mix them with the half linen (woven) stitch, they become new colors and are not as predictable as you might think. I just went with what I loved and got something entirely new (it was winter and I wanted bright and happy summer colors.) Your design is yours alone - so wear it proudly! (And hey, guess what: It’s perfect for binge watching the new season of “House of Cards!”)

Color combination questions for Mixology can be posted here in the Casapinka Group. Feel free to help each other out!

Ingredients (colors shown in bottom photos)

Planning your Shawl If you know my patterns, you know they aren’t difficult and this one is on the simple end of that. There is a worksheet at the left (and in the pattern) that you can use to plan your colors and keep track of them. Note that the borders are excluded because they use all of the colors.

Shape
Asymmetric rectangle (knit on the bias).

The pattern also contains directions for how to do swatches to see what new colors you might invent and how to make your shawl shorter.
