A further experiment in illusion or shadow knitting. This time I wanted to look at knitting the piece so that it could be viewed from the side instead of from below. This then allows the completed illusion to be used as a wall hanging.

The Mona Lisa Illusion measures 86cm by 114cm (34” by 45”) and uses about 260 grams of each of two colours of yarn. I do knit very tightly though so yours may well turn out to be bigger and use more yarn.

The pattern includes the chart at a small size, fitted on one page, and also at a larger size split into nine numbered sections to make it easier to follow.

The final two images here are an experiment in the use of Lego Digital Designer, a freely downloadable program, to replicate the image created using illusion knitting. Using the program the design can be viewed from all angles and seems to be a useful substitute for test knitting.

Visit our World of Illusion Knitting site for more examples and tutorials.

My Mona Lisa is now on display at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in Dallas, TX (May 2013)

September 2013 Update
The pattern now includes an extra chart intended for tablet users but others may find it helpful. You can view 20 ridges at a time and always be able to see the numbers across the bottom of the chart. Never lose your place again!
