This shawl uses typical shawl shaping to create a slightly-larger-than-half-circle shape, which allows it to sit easily on the shoulders without slipping and lends itself to being styled in multiple ways. The mesh sections on each edge are designed to be stretched out during blocking; this creates a collar-like effect that provides extra coverage in the front, and gives the appearance of a cape or open-front cardigan when worn in a traditional style. The stitch patterns are both charted and fully written out, and instructions are included to make the most of a skein of precious Gradient yarn.

From the pattern:
This shawl drew its original inspiration from Georgian architecture, so prevalent in the early days of the United States. Through the process of designing it retained some of the restrained simplicity and clean lines from that style, but it also developed a more modern and organic feel.
Unusually for me, this pattern didn’t have a name until the shawl was completed and blocked; one look at the finished product, and I was immediately reminded of fluttering moth wings. In the end I love the way this pattern synthesizes tradition and modernity, scale and repetition, and free-flowing nature and precision engineering. The result is a uniquely shaped shawl that’s easy to wear, beautifully bold, yet understated and feminine.
