This is a pattern for the pictured Shetland Lace Hap Shawl that I made from handspun from a local Shetland sheep of my acquaintance in the natural color. I spun at a weight of 14wpi so approximately a fingering weight yarn. The finished shawl weighs just under 16 ounces, so spin up that weight of wool, or purchase four 4 oz skeins of a fingering weight yarn.

I used a size 7 needle, but as I have said elsewhere, I knit very loosely. Use a larger size needle than you normally would for this weight of yarn. A lace shawl needs open, airy stitching and lots of drape.

I have to tell you that I really love this finished shawl in a shivers going down the back of my neck kind of way. I have ancestors from the Shetland Isles, and this shawl feels deeply familiar to me -- like something that I either have always had or that I should have had all along. Hence the title.

On row 12 for the Leaf Pattern in the central square the chart is accurate. The written directions read yo, K2, ssk, k3, k2tog, k1, yo, k1 which results in 11 stitches, not the necessary 10 for the repeat. It should be yo, K1, ssk, k3, k2tog, k1, yo, k1. If you are a direction rather than a chart follower please make the correction on your pattern.
