This is not a full pattern but a suggestion for an ongoing project to record a year in your knitting or crochet life. The idea is to work a patchwork of yarn, with each patch representing a different project and using the same yarn (so this is a very cheap project).

Patches can be worked in either knitting or crochet and patterns are included for several squares and rectangles in both, none of which need you to work out your tension first.

The finished patchwork can be a scarf, a blanket or anything else you can think of. This is really a project that you design yourself. Instead of recording everything you make in a year, perhaps you could use it to remind you of everything you knit for a new baby, or for charity?

Together with the knitted diary, you could also put together a scrapbook as you go along with more details of the things you make, including photos of the finished items. As well as giving a snapshot into your creative year, the two things will be an heirloom for future generations.

This pattern includes tips on planning and recording your project, as well as patterns for the patches and a suggested edging for the blocks.

If you would like to join me in this project, I shall be starting my own Year in Yarn in January 2019, both on my ravelry group ‘Frankie’s Knitted Stuff’ and my blog of the same name. We can learn together as we go along.

All my ravelry patterns are free to download but, if you enjoy them, please consider making a donation to the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, a charity which funds research and supports the families of children with a liver disease.
