Truly an ornamental masterpiece is the Nicola Pullover, whose most striking feature is densely cabled latticework on a background of stockinette. Its balancing counterpoint is a garter rib hem that continues upward to form a point at the waist — an architectural effect that is mirrored at the cuffs and plays nicely with characteristically diagonal raglan shaping at the shoulders. Tubular treatments at the hems and full-fashioned double decreases at the raglan edges of the sleeves add a professional and well-considered touch. All these elements are then brought together by a dramatic garter rib funnel neck to create a timeless statement piece.

Construction

This garment is worked flat in pieces from the bottom up, then sewn together. The collar is picked up and worked circularly after garment is assembled.

Yarn

  • 10 (11, 13, 14, 16) skeins of Brooklyn Tweed Shelter (100% American Targhee-Columbia wool; 140 yards/50 grams)
  • Photographed in color Tartan

Note: 4th size uses almost all of 14 skeins. You may wish to consider purchasing an extra skein for safety due to variations in individual work.

Yardage
1275 (1495, 1740, 1960, 2205) total yards of worsted weight wool yarn

Gauge

  • 20 stitches & 30 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch with Size A needle(s), after blocking

  • 23 stitches & 30 rows = 4” in Garter Ribbing with Size B needle(s), after blocking

Needles Knitter’s preferred style of needle may be used.

Size B (for Garter Ribbing)

  • One pair of straight needles or one 32” circular needle and one 16” circular needle

Size C (optional; for Tubular Cast On only)

  • One 32” circular needle, one size smaller than Size B
  • Suggested Size: 3.75 mm (US 5)

Note: If you have adjusted the needle size to obtain the correct gauge, it may or may not be necessary to make a matching adjustment to the needle size used for Tubular Cast On due to variance in individual work. You may wish to test your chosen cast-on method on your swatch.
