Octopod is a classic long stocking hat with stripes! This .PDF makes 4 sizes, from toddler to larger adult. The sample is shown in adult medium, about 20”/51cm around when relaxed.

The lining is optional, but it does open up your main-yarn options a bit—the main, massive part of the project can be done in wool that isn’t necessarily super soft, or you can make use of a fancier yarn in a smaller amount, or both.

Yardage estimates are for an adult medium! Realistically, you’ll need 2 balls of each color (MC/CC), or equivalent in scraps (I did run out; you can see where), and less for the lining.

Materials:
For adult medium (120 sts cast-on), 2 balls or 80g or 266yds each in MC and CC in Kroy Sock or similar heavy sock yarn, and 22g or 93yds of LC (liner color) in Malabrigo Mechita or similar yarn.
1 16”+ circular needle in US4/3.5mm, or size needed for gauge.
1 set of 4 or 5 DPNs, in size needed for gauge
3 removable stitch markers or scrap yarn
Tapestry needle.

Gauge:
Gauge is 24 sts and 34 rows over 4”/10cm in blocked stockinette worked in the round. Please check your gauge.

Measurements/Sizes:
Four sizes: 16(18, 20, 22)”/41(46, 51, 56)cm around by 17(24, 31, 35)”/43(61, 78, 89)cm tall, measured while relaxed. Some negative ease is recommended for this hat project.
