“Isengard is a circle of sheer rocks that enclose a valley as with a wall, and in the midst of that valley is a tower of stone called Orthanc. It was not made by Saruman, but by the Men of Numenor long ago; and it is very tall and has many secrets; yet it looks not to be a work of craft.” J.R.R. Tolkien “The Council of Elrond”

Skill Level: Intermediate due to extensive cabling with no rest rows.
Materials: Approx. 200 yds / 180 m of fingering weight yarn. The hat pictured used Madeline Tosh Pashmina in the color Silver Fox.
Tools: Cable needle, if necessary, tape measure, scissors, tapestry needle
Needle: US1 (2.25mm) circular needle with a 24inch cord, and US1(2.25mm) DPNs. The whole thing can be worked on DPNs, if you prefer, but it’s easier with a circular needle. The DPNs are necessary for working the crown.
Gauge: 8 stitches and 12 rounds per inch / 2.5cm in stockinette
Sizing: Finished measurements: circumference 15.5(17.5,19.5) inches or 40(45,50) cm and will stretch to fit a 20(22,24) inch or 51(56,61) cm head
