Perfect Fifth represents the beauty of music, geometry, fractals, and proportions. It is a simple design with a strong impact. It is a relaxing knit with only 6 rows in the repeating pattern; it is soon embedded in memory.

Perfect Fifth is knit sideways in one piece. Sideways shawls have the advantage of using up almost all of a luxurious skein or two: weigh your yarn at the outset, and knit until you have used almost half of your yarn. That is the midpoint of your shawl. Now knit the other half with the remaining yarn.

Both charts and written instructions are provided. There is an optional straight section if you prefer a longer shawl without increasing depth. You can customize in other ways as well.

You can use any yarn and any needle size you like. It works best to use a relatively large needle for your yarn so that the lace work blocks out well. A generous estimate for yardage for a triangular shape (no straight section) is 450 to 500 yards in fingering weight yarn (4 mm needles). The test knit is 62” long and 18” deep (157 x 46 cm).

Another test knit in fingering weight yarn is longer with a straight section in the middle; this project used a slightly larger needle size (5 mm) and pretty much all of a single 100g skein (440 yards).

An update to the pattern was uploaded on July 4 2013. No changes to the pattern, just some clarification to the notes.
