A top-down knitted hat with a bold, two color, Fair Isle design, suggesting the swirling scrollwork patterns found in a Persian carpet. Although instructions are provided for one size, it can be adjusted with other weights of yarn, or simply knitted at a different gauge, for a smaller, or larger size hat.

The model is knitted using two contrasting colors of a soft, bouncy 3-ply wool from Barrett Wool Co. Home Worsted Weight has a crisp stitch definition and creates a smooth, cohesive fabric that highlights your color work. I used 150 yds. each of two colors, #017 Ellie Gray and #019 Pepin.

The hat is knitted from the top down beginning with the main color. It begins on DPNs with a few cast on stitches, and then stitches are incrementally increased to the number needed for the full circumference of the hat. The Fair Isle pattern begins after the crown shaping is completed, and is followed by ribbing using a smaller needle size, and one final row knit in the contrast color before binding off.
