This shawl is part of the Gawain’s Shield shawl collection, based upon the medieval story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Piety involves a knight’s religious ideals, and Avalon—although often seen as a pagan place—can also represent the religious Christianity of knighthood. Indeed, a small church once stood on Glastonbury Tor, thought to be the location of Avalon. The stitch pattern on the border is fairly simple and not flashy, allowing the beauty of the merino/silk yarn to be the star of this shawl.

Construction and Size
The crescent shape of the shawl is created by using German short rows and garter stitch. Then, the lace border is worked using the knitted-on border technique. When blocked, the shawl measures 45” (114.3 cm) long and 7.5” (19 cm) at widest section. The shape makes it wearable both as a narrow shawl as well as a scarf.

The sample was knit all in one color; however, the body and border can be knit as two different colors. If you want to work the shawl with two colors, you’ll need 321 yds for the body and 321 yds for the border.
