• In first row, pm = place marker, in subsequent rows pm = pass marker.
• Keep first and last 5 stitches of each row in garter stitch by knitting every row. These garter stitch edges will form the button bands.
• After the garter stitch neckline rows, make a buttonhole at one end of every 8 (8,16, 16, 16)th row as follows: k2, yo, k2tog, k1. This centers the buttonhole vertically in the garter stitch band. For a girl’s sweater, make the buttonhole band on the right front, for a boy’s sweater, make the buttonhole band on the left front.
