This pattern is a great way to use that special skein of handspun or luxury yarn in a project that you can show off whenever there is a chill in the air.

This cowl is great for that lightly spun 2-ply yarn that you just can’t live without but you don’t know what to do with. A lightly spun 2-ply doesn’t have the body to create deep stitch definition, but it wants to be more than plain garter stitch. By using twisted stitches in this lace pattern, you can make a more dramatic statement. And if you use a springy 3-ply, the twisted stitches will make the texture pop even more.

Required Skills:
The cowl is made with a lace pattern that uses twisted knit stitches, yarn overs, twisted decrease stitches, double decreases, and bobbles. All unusual decreases are described in the pattern. The cowl is cast on along the circumference edge and joined to work in the round.

21 sts and 36 rows = 4” (10 cm) in lace pattern, after blocking

Finished Measurements:
8” (20.25 cm) x 32” (81.25 cm) circumference

U.S. Size 3 (3.25 mm), 24” (61 cm) circular needle,
or size needed to produce noted gauge

Natural Sample - Ross Farm Heritage & Rare Breed Fibers,
Registered Romney “Aurora’s Pride”, 68 g/250 yds
2-ply fingering, 1 skein, Sample used 190 yds

Orange Sample – Stonehedge Fiber Mill Shepherd’s Wool
Worsted Spun Fine Wool, 1.6 oz/230 yds
Shepherd’s Fingering, “Creamsicle”, 1 skein, Sample used 175 yds

Additional Supplies:
Tapestry Needle, Scissors, Tape measure, Blocking board and pins, 16 Stitch markers if desired, to mark repeats.

Good Substitutions:
Any sock or fingering weight yarn in wool or a wool-blend. A sock yarn with 25% nylon content may not drape or block open as much as 100% wool, so consider going up a needle size or two in this case. A handspun yarn in wool or wool-blend in a fingering weight should work well, too.
