I love the speckled pops of color in Yarn Catcher’s yarns and wanted to design scarf that would make the most of her hand-dyed yarns. Because few of us can resist a the draw of a stunning skein of hand-dyed yarn, I wanted it to be a one skein wonder.

This is an asymmetrical triangle scarf. You begin with a few stitches at the right edge and knit across to the left edge, increasing as you go.

By incorporating a combination of garter and a slip stitch pattern, the color really moves. The slipped stitch carries different colors over the knit columns for a beautiful effect. Hence the name, Read Between the Lines. When you near the end, the slip stitch pattern moves across the whole scarf for a dramatic finish.

The pattern is suitable for advanced beginners and above. The pattern is easy to memorize once you’ve finished the set up rows.

Options for modifying:

  • You can modify the scarf’s size with more or less yardage, allow at least 10% of your yardage for the garter and bind off. (I used a food scale and measured using grams.)
  • Change needle size (be mindful of gauge even though it’s a scarf).
  • If you use a different light fingering, make sure you have at least 463 yards, or your scarf will be smaller. I really knit to the end of the skein.

I wanted to see how far I would get with lesser yardage than the pattern calls for. Using Hedgehog Skinny Singles, I was only able to complete the third repeat in Section 2, plus 3 rows.

I omitted the garter edge and bound off using the lace bind off, knitwise.

Yarn Catcher yarns are available on Etsy and at Westport Yarns
