Poetry mittens appear towards the end of the 18th century and become very popular in the beginning of the 19th century. As printing becomes less expensive, and publications geared towards women start appearing in the marketplace poems and religious pieces meant to be knit into mittens, or for samplers, are published, further popularizing the art.
