Rubus suberectus Shawl
Rubus suberectus
This plant is the wild cousin to both blackberries and raspberries, and I have it on good authority that the fruit tastes just as good as you might expect. I debated including any food plants in this collection. There are so many of them that they could easily demand their own project if not carefully watched. But this plant is not cultivated commercially, and it seemed too charming to leave out. The socks echo the simple, almost sparse petals of the flower. The design is easy to work, despite its impressive appearance. The shawl is inspired by the beautiful round berries. The intricate bottom border is a bit of a challenge (it’s true lace, worked on both right and wrong sides), but it soon gives way to a simple stockinette body and a picot hem. The combination is charming.
