Sateenkaari is a top-down crescent shaped shawl with stripes. It’s designed for eight colours, but you can knit it using fewer colours and either stop earlier or knit wider stripes.

Suggested gauge: 27 sts and 32 rows per 10 cm in stockinette stitch. Gauge is not important, but different gauge will result in different yardage of yarn needed.

Yarn: Any yarn with 450 to 700 m (490 to 765 yd) per 100 g, hence from light fingering to heavy lace weight, but heavier weights will work as well.

Yardage: First colour 100 m / 110 yd, second colour 120 m / 131 yd, last colour 190 m / 208 yd and the rest of the colours 160 m / 175 yd for light fingering weight. The yardage will depend on the yarn: the heavier the yarn, the more metres/yards you’ll need.

Needles: 3 mm/US 2.5 or any to get the gauge. Note that you will need a long circular needle, straight needles won’t be long enough.

The rainbow shawl in the photos was knit with ColourMart Diamante, holding the yarn tripled. The yarn is no longer available, but any yarn with silk and of similar weight can be used. Note that the metres/yards given are for a yarn held as is, not tripled.

Big thanks to my tester piimu, who suggested a better cast-on method!

ERRATUM: Finnish version only: Suomenkielisessä ohjeessa pitäisi lukea 1. kerroksella “neulo oikein etu- ja takareunastaan”, siis ei oikein yhteen. Korjattu pdf laitettu Ravelryyn 8.3.2015 klo 21.
