SWEATER ‘SCHIER’

Sweater ‘SCHIER’ is a classical, yoke sweater design, when you look at the form. But it stands apart from other yoke sweaters, because the textured patterns in the yoke are arranged in a fresh new way; cables that start small and end broader are alternated by plain purl stitches with knobs worked in it.

The sweater is knitted on circular needles, top down, so you start knitting the neck part and end with the hem. After the yoke there will be a division, the front- and backpart are knitted as a whole and the sleeves will be knitted apart.

The yarns that I choose for this sweaterdesign - Milano and Piura from Lamana - are a superfine merino with a bit finest cashmere and a laceweight baby alpaca that must be held and knitted together. The prototype was knitted in my own handdyed yarn, but the effect of subtle fading colours with a touch of contrast colour can be perfectly reached with the recommended yarns.

The sweater comes in 5 sizes S-M-L-XL-XXL
for brestwidhts resp. 53-56-59-62-65 cm

The gauge is 24 x 35 stitches = 10 x 10 cm, knitted with needles, 5 and 3 EU size

The sweater is named after and inspired by the smallest of the Wadden islands. That is a group of five small Dutch islands, in the wadden Sea; a natural area between Den Helder in the Netherlands and Esbjerg in Denmark. The shallow waters of the Wadden Sea are influenced by the tides; one moment everything is covered with salty water, the next moment you can even walk on the ‘dry’ seabed. The area is Unesco World Heritage Area. The 5 Dutch Wadden islands are well known for their pittoresque villages surrounded by beautiful and desolate natural landscapes with a very special flora and fauna.

The isle of Schiermonnikoog is a National Park, because of the diversity of its landscapes; you can find forest, dunes, polders, salt marshes, mudflats and small creeks and lakes.
The cabled textures in the yoke of this sweater stands for the water that comes and goes in the creeks flowing with the tides. The knobs could be seen as the droppings of the countless rabbits that live on the island of Schier.

In my Si Sjo Etsy shop and in the webshop of www.ajoure.nl will be kits available (soon) , in 4 colourways, with all the yarn that you need to knit Schier, cthe sweater.
