Barefoot strolls with waves lapping at your toes. Playing tag with the ocean. Tide pools filled with star fish, urchins and anemones. Sea gulls over head, and distant whale spouts on the horizon. Jagged cliffs, lighthouses, horns and bells clanging. Sandy feet, frothy cold water, combing the beach for agates and shells. Digging clams and oysters. Salt water taffy, clam chowder, fishing from the docks while your crab pots float near by. Watching seals and jelly fish bob in the distance.

These socks are inspired by time spent at the coast with my grandparents growing up, and the rugged beauty of the Pacific coast. Dedicated to the memory of all those summers spent beach combing with my grandparents.

Needles:
40” circs US size 0 - 2 depending gauge. I like to work the cuff one size down from needle I use for sock body.

Yarn:
Fingering weight sock yarn of your fiber choice. I suggest a wool, nylon blend for durability.

You will need six to eight colors. I suggest high contrast colors so your designs pop. If you want your color work to pop more make sure to use solid yarns. I used tweeds for a more natural effect.

  1. Sea blue, toes
  2. Sandy tan, main color
  3. Orange, star fish/sea star (optional)
  4. Gray, stony heels
  5. Brown, fence slats
  6. Black, fence wire, sea birds
  7. Green, sea grass (optional)
  8. Sky blue, ankles (can use sea blue)

Yardage will depend on foot size. Follow the yardage requirements typically needed to knit socks in your foot size. Further yardage suggestions in pattern.

Gauge:
Roughly 16 stitches to 2 inches wide and 22 rows to 2 inches high.

Notions:
4 to 6 stitch markers, or scrap yarn, to mark center of heels.
Crochet hook in small size or tapestry needle to work in ends.

Sizes:
Women’s XS, S, M and L with instructions to make smaller or larger.

The photos in this pattern show a size S with XS heel.
