From the pattern:

In 2010, I released the pattern for the Falling Blocks hat, a three-color, two-pattern double-knit tour de force. When Willow Yarns asked me to do a series of colorwork patterns in 2012, I decided that I’d take some of the work I’d done on that hat and apply it to a drastically simplified version.

This hat is based on the tumbling-blocks pattern, reduced to two colors and further reduced by removing strips of the blocks, creating the illusion of blocks that fade into the background.

Because of the weight of the fabric, this hat was not intially designed for a fold-up brim, but the instructions offer you that option.
