DESCRIPTION:
Silloth (pronounced SILL-uth) is a charted scarf pattern that blends modern minimalism with ancient roots. Designed as a two-color stranded colorwork project with smooth i-cord edging, it also lends itself beautifully to double knitting or even as a knit-purl textured design.

The name Silloth means “sea barn” or “barn by the sea,” derived from the Old English sæ (“sea”) and Old Norse hlaða (“lath” or “barn”). This quiet, windswept origin speaks to the pattern’s structured simplicity and timeless appeal.

The motif of Silloth features bold shapes that echo like ripples on water, fluid and quietly hypnotic. To some, it may resemble the woven “God’s Eye” symbol; to others, it could suggest natural forms like weathered wood grain, shaped by time and tide. The effect is both modern and ancient, abstract yet grounded.

The undulating shapes create a meditative rhythm inviting slow, thoughtful knitting. Worked flat in stranded colorwork, the repeating pattern plays with contrast and motion, while the i-cord edging lends a polished, architectural finish. Yarn floats are left intentionally visible creating their own visual effect.

TECHNIQUES:
Techniques used in this design are stranded knitting and slipped stitches to create an i-cord edge border. Grafting is briefly used to finish the final stitches at the end.
