A wide border of lace and cables combined is made sideways, for as long as you require, and the top section then knitted up to the top.
This shawlette can be made in any thickness of yarn and the size varied by the number of “points” in the border.
The top section is a simple eyelet pattern or garter stitch, in the same yarn or a contrasting one of the same weight .

The samples here are made in 4 ply / fingering yarn (silver and purple) and 10 ply / worsted (black and grey), but you could also use 2 ply / lace or 8ply / DK yarn.
For example: a single 100 gm skein of 4 ply fingering is enough for the border section of a medium sized shawl – use up your special stash!

Both charts and text are given in this pattern.

Suitable for competent, intermediate and advanced knitters – not for beginners.

The inspiration for the name comes from a stone age village in Orkney…
