There are nearly 450 bridges in Pittsburgh, but my favorite has always been the Smithfield Street Bridge, which spans the Monongahela River. The current structure (a designated National Historic Landmark) is actually the third iteration of the bridge, and this scarf evokes elements of all three versions.

To knit this scarf, you need to know how to:

• knit and purl when working flat,
• work a cable and texture pattern from a chart or written directions, and
• pick up stitches along an edge.

The cable pattern is both written and charted, and the length of the scarf can be adjusted by working more/fewer repeats of the cable motif.

A note about the yarn: Ross Farm Fibers’ yarns are limited in their availability, as any particular yarn comes from a specific sheep. Any of their three-ply sport yarns will work well for this pattern, as will any sport-to-DK-weight commercial yarn. If you are substituting yarns, I recommend using one with multiple plies for good stitch definition in the cables.
