Welcome to the 10th anniversary edition of the Westknits Mystery Shawl Knit Along (MKAL)! This year is going to be a beautifully bold and graphic shawl to celebrate ten years of Westknits mystery shawls.

Join the Starflake MKAL Ravelry group here to participate in the fun.

Clue 2 - Friday, October 11
Clue 3 - Friday, October 18
Clue 4 - Friday, October 25

Shop our collection of yarns and kits for the Starflake MKAL at Stephen & Penelope.

When you purchase the pattern, you will receive an introductory PDF to prepare for the Mystery KAL. The first instructions for the pattern will be sent as a Ravelry update Friday, October 4. Then, you will receive a section of the mystery shawl pattern each week until the final design is revealed on October 25.

Sizes: The overall shape and dimensions are part of the mystery! Starflake wil be a large shawl, but not as big as last year’s Texture Time shawl.

Yarn: Fingering weight

Recommended Yarn: Garn Surr Søkke Merino
La Bien Aimée Super Sock
The Urban Purl Lux Hi Twist
Twisted Fintch BFL Sock
Undercover Otter Squirm Sock

You can use any yarn you like for the mystery shawl. It is not required to purchase a kit to participate, but we put them together every year to spark the inspiration and make the color choosing easy.

Yardage: MC (main color) - 2 skeins of wool (399yds / 365m)
CC (contrast color) - 2 skeins of wool (399yds / 365m)

Needles: US 5 / 3.75mm circular in 40” / 100cm length or size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge: 22 sts & 48 rows = 4” / 10cm in garter stitch (un-blocked). Try to get close to the recommended stitch gauge to ensure you don’t run out of yarn.

Garter Stitch Swatch
If you would like to see how your colors interact, I recommend striping the colors together like this…

Knit 2 rows with MC.
Knit 2 rows with CC.

Repeat two-row stripes until you get a good sense of your gauge and color interaction.

I designed this year’s shawl to feature two colors for a high contrast graphic design. I recommend choosing two colors that have a high contrast to see the crisp lines and details of the shawl. The shawl will be equally beautiful with a lower contrast if you prefer a softer, more subtle effect. Use solid, semi-solid, or lightly speckled yarns. I would avoid heavily speckled or variegated yarns for this design as they may obscure the design details.

Clues will automatically be sent to you as a pattern update in your Ravelry inbox each Friday starting October 4.

Please use the Mystery Shawl KAL square thumbnail photo or a photo of your un-knit yarn as the first photo on your Ravelry project page throughout the month of October to avoid spoiler images.
