Tama the Takahē
About Tama:
Tama the Takahē is part of the New Zealand Wildlife Collection. Tama is a life-sized, which is pretty big, as Takahē are the largest living rail (a family of small-medium sized ground-dwelling birds with short wings, large feet, and long toes). Tama’s bright colours and big soft body set his apart from the commonly compared pūkeko. Although Tama does have wings, he can not fly but instead uses his beautiful wings as part of his courtship. Takahē were thought to be extinct until 1948, but now there are more than 500 living in New Zealand. Takahē enjoy being in pair or family groups, so let Tama come join your family!
